Understating high technology has a long tradition in the cycling world. Some of the fanciest, priciest, hardest-to-source stuff comes without logos, preferring to murmur. 3T’s Vola Team Stealth Aerobar is firmly in this camp.

This is still a Team-level 3T offering. The only difference is the accents are black-on-black, which can’t be noticed  unless the bike is standing still, polished, on a sunny day. The effect is one of exclusivity, of prototypes, of the inside line. It’s aspiring to be far more than it is, and that’s just fine by you. In the 3T universe, the Team line sits just below LTD and just above Pro. Team takes advantage of the LTD designs and fabricates the same shapes out of less costly materials. But they don’t have to know that.

Like the LTD, the Vola Team Stealth combines both a basebar with extensions. The benefit to the integration is better aerodynamics around the extensions, better clamping, and much lower weight, as the clamp is built into the base bar.

The base bar, like the LTD, is a carbon-fiber wing. The only difference is the cloth used. It’s a lower-modulus, easier to source and build. It still measures 38cm wide center-to-center, with threading for cables and wires built in, and hand rests which have a 147.5mm reach from the centerline of the win to the foremost edge of the bullhorns.

The extensions of the Team match the length, 335mm, and the shape, S-bend, of those on the team. They still have a 40mm rise. The difference is that these 22.2mm diameter bars are fabricated out of aluminum. As strong if not stronger, only with a small weight penalty. It’s also a bit less scary to chop these down when you want them shorter (most cut from the back).

The bars can rise from the base bar, starting at 30mm, but can be stacked as high as 97mm, using the included spacers. The armrests can be moved in to 220mm between the two to 340mm.

The armrests themselves are so light and minimal that 3T designed an aero bridge that spans the distance between the armrests. This stiffens up the system, and is necessary for optimal reliability. They are also flexible in terms of where you place them. They can be in front of the clamp, behind the clamp, tilted in or out, or straight ahead.

The system, with no spacers, and the extensions at full length, weighs as little as 810g for the base bar and armrests and extensions.

The 3T Vola Team Stealth Aerobar offers great aerodynamics and adjustability at a smart price.
